HISTORY: Hayes House is a grade II listed building predominantly Regency in style, but with parts of the house dating back to the Medieval period. The village of Milverton is one of the largest villages in Somerset and it has many fine Georgian buildings. The Medieval street pattern can still be seen around the village church. It is thought the name of Milverton was taken from the old Town Mill to the north of the village. The Domesday survey of 1086 shows that Milverton had one of only seven recorded markets in the whole of Somerset. The woollen industry became a cottage industry for centuries, with many spinning wheels and looms being worked throughout the village. The weavers of Milverton were well known for their serges, druggets and baizes. As there were no textile mills in Milverton the products of the cottagers were sent to the mills in Wellington for finishing and distribution. With so much history and many beautiful properties to appreciate, Milverton is a wonderful village to explore
